Bean Hollow State Beach
San Mateo, California
A beautiful sky floated overhead and a beautiful sea swirled at my feet, and I thought to myself, "I'm standing in between beautiful".

San Mateo, California
March 2010
My very first long exposure with an exposure time of four minutes! The exceedingly long exposure time contributed to a very noisy image that required a lot of cleanup in post processing. However, to my delight it also enabled me to capture that long beam of light piercing into the fog.

San Francisco, California
Oakland Bay Bridge viewed from the Embarcadero in San Francisco and looking east towards Yerba Buena Island. The vertical lights are a new installation designed by a local artist and will remain on display for two years. The artist programmed the lights to undulate, sparkle and flash in various patterns and designs.

Union Square
San Francisco, California
March 30, 2014
There are several hearts just like this one scattered throughout the city. Each one is uniquely painted by one of San Francisco's celebrated artists. This particular heart was painted in celebration of the America's Cup Yacht Race hosted by San Francisco this year. I blended elements from eight separate long exposure images which were shot in a one hour period to form this composite. One shot was made for the boy in the red vest and his father, one shot for the girl riding the bicycle, one shot for the mother pushing the stroller, another for the passing cable car, etc..

Financial District
San Francisco, California
May 27, 2013 & April 1, 2014
Rain like this in San Francisco has become a rare event in recent years. There were perhaps only six days of any notable rainfall in the city for the entire years of 2013 and 2014.

Embarcadero Street
San Francisco, California
April 1, 2014
San Francisco maintains a collection of over 50 vintage streetcars and trolleys from all over the world. All of them have been carefully restored to their original colors and markings which help to add to the wonderful vibrancy of San Francisco. These cars carry passengers along the Embarcadero and Market Street everyday. This one, number 1052, was built in 1948 and originally served the Los Angeles Railway. Following closely behind is 1075, built in 1946 and originally served Cleveland, Ohio.

San Francisco, California
Built in 1928 by Società Italiana Carminati & Toselli of Italy. Commonly called the “Peter Witt” for the railway commissioner of Cleveland, Ohio who designed it in 1915. The No. 1856 operated in Milan, Italy before it and nine others were purchased by San Francisco Muni in 1998. It is now part of Muni’s historic streetcar fleet and runs along the Embarcadero waterfront.Raygun Gothic Rocketship against the Oakland Bay Bridge

Raygun Gothic Rocketship
Pier 14, Embarcadero
San Francisco, California
September 11, 2010
The Raygun Gothic Rocketship is a rococo retro-futurist future-rustic vernacular between yesterday’s tomorrow and the future that never was, a critical kitsch somewhere between The Moons of Mongo & Manga Nouveau. Inspired by 1930s and 40s science fiction, the 40-foot tall, 8-ton rocket ship was a fabulous attraction displayed San Francisco for several years. In 2013 it was relocated to Calgary, Alberta Canada. I wonder where it is today?
(Actually an old favorite that I re-processed for better quality)All These Lights I Hold...
San Francisco, California
Every holiday season Transamerica displays a bright beacon at the top of the pyramid and the Embarcadero Towers display lights tracing the edges of the buildings. This is a long exposure and the streaming red/orange lights are from the tail lights of cars and buses.

I made this image just after sunset during a time when day transitions into night, a brief period photographers call the "blue hour".
Fog like this rolls in from the sea and into San Francisco often, but its form and appearance is fickle thing to predict. Sometimes it’s a slow moving, thick mass that completely engulfs the bridge and parts of the city. Other times it can be a fast moving mist that blows in fast and back out just as quick. For photographers this wonderful phenomenon is a challenge it capture. You may see the huge white mass approach from the sea, but by the time you get on location (a one hour hike in near darkness in this case) and set up your gear, it’s gone.
I've been searching for just this kind of condition over the Golden Gate Bridge for several years, where the iconic bridge towers pierce a thick blanket of low fog. Then one evening in November, it happened. The remarkable colors are natural.Seattle Style - Merchants Cafe
Pioneer Square
Seattle, Washington
Constructed in 1890 and designed by W. E. Boone (a direct descendent of Daniel Boone), this is Seattle's oldest restaurant. When it opened its doors as a saloon, they served five-cent beers to miners waiting to visit the upstairs brothel.

Seattle Center
Seattle, Washington
At 605 feet tall, this observation tower is a landmark of the Pacific Northwest and an icon of Seattle. It was built in the Seattle Center for the 1962 World's Fair. Presently (September 2017) it is undergoing a major remodel that will add a glass floor. A temporary construction platform is visible under the top observation deck.

Ross Lake
Rockport, Washington
August 31, 2016
Ross Lake is a 23 mile long reservoir lying in the North Cascade mountains of northern Washington State, United States, and stretching into southern British Columbia, Canada.
This is a gorgeous lake full of large Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Brook Trout, and Dolly Varden. We enjoyed two days days of fishing while living in a rustic floating cabin, and we caught a lot of big fish in our rented blue boat #9.
Nikon D810 + Nikkor 24-70mm @ 24mm. Three image composite. I made this photograph at 5:30AM while standing on a moving dock. The ambient light was much darker than how it appears in this photo, so I had to push the ISO at the expense of noise to achieve usable images. A gentle breeze rippled the water as the moving boat swayed from right to left. I made one long exposure to smooth the water; then repositioned the boat and made a shorter exposure to get a sharp photo of it; then made a third exposure to get a sharp photo of the mountains. I blended the three photographs together for this final composite.
