San Mateo, California March 2010 My very first long exposure with an exposure time of four minutes! The exceedingly long exposure time contributed to a very noisy image that required a lot of cleanup in post processing. However, to my delight it also enabled me to capture that long beam of light piercing into the fog. Nikon D90 + Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 @ 170mm, f8.0, 4 minutes, ISO 400.
San Francisco, California Every holiday season Transamerica displays a bright beacon at the top of the pyramid and the Embarcadero Towers display lights tracing the edges of the buildings. This is a long exposure and the streaming red/orange lights are from the tail lights of cars and buses. Nikon D800 + Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 @ 86mm, f/14, 30 sec, ISO 100.
Western span of the Oakland Bay Bridge
San Francisco, California Oakland Bay Bridge viewed from the Embarcadero in San Francisco and looking east towards Yerba Buena Island. The vertical lights are a new installation designed by a local artist and will remain on display for two years. The artist programmed the lights to undulate, sparkle and flash in various patterns and designs. Nikon D800
Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet A 1936 Blackhawk Museum Danville, California September 20, 2009 The Blackhawk Museum houses a permanent collection of some of the finest automobiles in the world. The Mercedes-Benz 540K has long been one of my favorite cars. Elegant long lines and with curves in all the right places. Double processed in post: converted the original color image to B&W to accentuate the chrome and remove distracting colors in the reflections, then carefully blended back in select colors from the original. Nikon D90 + Nikkor 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 @ 16mm, f/4.0, 1/10 sec. Handheld.

Gastown Vancouver, British Columbia Canada Founded in 1867, Gastown is the original settlement that became the core of Vancouver, British Columbia. It was named for "Gassy" Jack Deighton, a steamboat captain from Yorkshire, England, who settled and opened the area's first saloon. As the area grew it became the center for seamen, fishermen, railway workers and loggers. Nikon D850 + Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8
Sausalito, California Published in: IX Galleries (www.1X.com) I made this image just after sunset during a time when day transitions into night, a brief period photographers call the "blue hour". Fog like this rolls in from the sea and into San Francisco often, but its form and appearance is fickle thing to predict. Sometimes it’s a slow moving, thick mass that completely engulfs the bridge and parts of the city. Other times it can be a fast moving mist that blows in fast and back out just as quick. For photographers this wonderful phenomenon is a challenge to capture. You may see the huge white mass approach from the sea, but by the time you get on location (a one hour hike in near darkness in this case) and set up your gear, it’s gone. I've been searching for just this kind of condition over the Golden Gate Bridge for several years, where the iconic bridge towers pierce a thick blanket of low fog. Then one evening in November, it happened. The remarkable colors are natural.
Union Square San Francisco, California March 30, 2014 There are several hearts just like this one scattered throughout the city. Each one is uniquely painted by one of San Francisco's celebrated artists. This particular heart was painted in celebration of the America's Cup Yacht Race hosted by San Francisco this year. I blended elements from eight separate long exposure images which were shot in a one hour period to form this composite. One shot was made for the boy in the red vest and his father, one shot for the girl riding the bicycle, one shot for the mother pushing the stroller, another for the passing cable car, etc.. Nikon D800 + Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 @ 56mm, f/6.3, 0.4 secs, ISO 100 + Singh-Ray Vari ND filter and tripod.

Don't Let the Sunshine Spoil Your Rain
Financial District San Francisco, California May 27, 2013 & April 1, 2014 Rain like this in San Francisco has become a rare event in recent years. There were perhaps only six days of any notable rainfall in the city for the entire years of 2013 and 2014. Nikon D800 + 70-200mm @ 160mm, f2.8, ISO 200. Composite image.
Pier 14, Embarcadero San Francisco, California September 11, 2010 The Raygun Gothic Rocketship is a rococo retro-futurist future-rustic vernacular between yesterday’s tomorrow and the future that never was, a critical kitsch somewhere between The Moons of Mongo & Manga Nouveau. Inspired by 1930s and 40s science fiction, the 40-foot tall, 8-ton rocket ship was a fabulous attraction displayed San Francisco for several years. In 2013 it was relocated to Calgary, Alberta Canada. I wonder where it is today? (Actually an old favorite that I re-processed for better quality)
