James Lick Telescope
Lick Observatory
Mount Hamilton
The 36-inch (91-centimeter) refracting telescope was Earth's largest refracting telescope during the period from when it saw first light on January 3, 1888. It measures 57 feet long, 4 feet in diameter, and weighs over 25,000 lbs! It uses two 36-inch diameter glass disks fabricated in France, and ground and polished into lenses in Massachussetts. Commissioned by San Francisco businessman Jame Lick and built around 1880. Housed in the Mt. Hamilton Observatory which was built just for this telescope, the telescope is still operational.
