Milky Way Over Mount Baker Wilderness @ 10:56 PM

from Artist Point in the Mount Baker Wilderness, elevation 5100 feet (1554 meters) above sea level. Deming, Washington July 18, 2015 On a new moon when the night is darkest and when the sky is clear of clouds, the Milky Way can been seen with the naked eye. My camera is pointed south, the orange glow you see beyond the mountain range emanates from the glowing city lights of Seattle, Washington. This is a two image composite. In the first image I exposed for the sky for 37 seconds; the second image I exposed for the trees for 4 minutes and 50 seconds. Nikon D810 + Nikkor 14-24mm @ 14mm.

  • "Seal Rock" Beach ;o)

    "Seal Rock" Beach ;o)

San Mateo, California March 18, 2012 Made during a stormy weekend of heavy rain and high winds. Winds measured up to 33 mph at this location. The ocean was rough and the salt spray nearly claimed my camera in the making of this image. My tripod is planted just outside of the bottom edge of this photo. In rhythmic fashion the water would slowly fill the crack in the rock, then suddenly surged high, crashing into the rocks at my feet, soaking myself and the camera. The camera miraculously survived this ordeal and still works.

San Mateo, California March 2010 Nikon D90 + Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 at 170mm, f8.0, ISO 400 and an exposure time of four minutes! The exceedingly long exposure time contributed to a very noisy image that required a lot of cleanup in post processing. However, to my delight it also enabled me to capture that long beam of light shooting into the fog.

Semiahmoo Bay Blaine, Washington 2016 This is my favorite spot at Semiahmoo. Here you can watch Blue Herons congregate along the shoreline and families of sea otters play among the rocks. Most times I have this entire stretch of beautiful beach to myself. Nikon D810 + Nikkor 14-24 @ 23mm + ND 5, f/22, 8.0 sec.
